A beginner’s guide to Yoga

New Perspectives on Storytelling and Art

Fear is what often stops people coming to Yoga, when a beginner comes to my class I emphasise that Yoga is for everyone, every body type, every body shape, and for all abilities. In a world of cut throat competitiveness to be the best at everything, a yoga class offers the opportunity to just be yourself, in the moment, as you are. It’s a space where you can let go of your roles and responsibilities and just be. Our minds are mostly thinking about the future or the past, we struggle to be in the present moment. In class I repeat and repeat to bring attention to your breath in order to be in the present moment. Our breath connects us inwards, it takes us out of our heads and into our bodies. Yoga often has the image of people standing on their heads and twisting into strange positions, and that’s what can stop people trying a class, however, there are hundreds of other asanas- postures, that we practice without ever needing to do a headstand! In class everything can be modified. If someone does has a specific disability I do recommend they try a slower class first, however for the healthy and able bodied joining a regular class is fine. With regular practice you are not a beginner for very long!

Being ‘good’ at Yoga

‘I’m not very good’ is a phrase I often hear from a beginner before class. I just like people to get on their mat and feel and experience the class for themselves. We can read and hear descriptions of what anything is like in life, however, until we actually experience it and feel it for ourselves, we cannot know. I encourage beginners to go in the back line in class, so they can use the wall if necessary for balancing postures, and to follow those around them. Repitition is the key to everything in the life, and this applies to Yoga as well. As our bodies are designed to move, Yoga is a wonderful tool that moves every muscle group, tones every organ, stretches and aligns us, calms us down, and re-energises us. Who wouldn’t want that?!
